Né dans le milieu du théâtre et de la danse au sein d’une troupe itinérante au Japon du XIVe siècle, Oniyasha, âgé de 12 ans, a un problème : il ne voit pas l’intérêt de tout cela. « Pourquoi dois-je ici poser le pied gauche plutôt que le droit ? Pourquoi une représentation est-elle bonne et une autre mauvaise ? Pourquoi les gens dansent-ils, d’ailleurs ? » Tout cela lui semble parfaitement arbitraire, jusqu’à ce qu’une rencontre fortuite dans une cabane délabrée le mette sur la voie d’une révolution artistique qui influencera une grande partie de la culture japonaise à venir. Récit romancé des premières années de Zeami Motokiyo (Oniyasha), fondateur du théâtre Nô moderne — l’art théâtral le plus ancien encore en existence au monde —, ce parcours d’artiste vers l’âge adulte donne vie avec brio à un homme bien en avance sur son temps, à une époque où le Japon connaissait l’un de ses plus grands essors culturels et sociaux.
